Suggested next step

Your estimate is still high. Consider double protection.

For very loud environments, start with deeply inserted high-NRR foam earplugs and add well-sealed earmuffs. Fit and seal matter more than the package number.

⚠️ Important Note

NRR is a laboratory rating. Real-world protection can be significantly lower due to fit, seal, and wear time.

This calculator provides an estimate for educational purposes only. Always follow manufacturer guidelines and safety regulations.

Double Hearing Protection

For indoor shooting ranges, impulse noise, and other very loud settings, pair well-inserted foam earplugs with earmuffs that seal fully around the ears. The setup only works if both pieces fit correctly.

Higher-NRR Options

When the estimate is borderline, compare higher-NRR foam plugs, stronger earmuffs, or double protection. Small fit problems can remove several dB of expected protection.

Fit Check

Roll foam plugs tightly, insert deeply, and hold them while they expand. For earmuffs, keep hair, glasses, and hat straps from breaking the seal.
